Yalikavak - Quiet Cosmopolitan Charm

Formerly the Bodrum area’s main fishing port, Yalikavak is considered the most elite village on the Bodrum Peninsula. It has a bustling centre, particularly on market day, relaxing sandy beaches, high quality restaurants as well as several magnificent bays. The surrounding hills offer a unique view of Yalikavak, arguably one of the best views on the entire Mediterranean coastline. These hills are also perfect for pleasant picnics and long walks. The town is attractive and some antiquated buildings have undergone sensitive restoration and conversation to modern use, one being an old water cistern converted to a gallery displaying the works of well-known local and national painters. Another is a disused olive oil processing plant which has been refurbished and turned into an attractive souvenir shop.

Yalikavak is becoming ever more popular as an alternative resort to Bodrum and still supports a thriving fishing industry and the restaurants around the picturesque harbor display a wide selection of fresh fish every day.

There are many shops in the traffic free center, and every week the town hosts one of the biggest fruit, vegetable and clothing markets on the Bodrum Peninsula. The small harbor is surrounded by restaurants and bars, and while there is the occasional disco bar the general atmosphere is quiet, unhurried and relaxed.

Active civic groups work in concert with the municipality to promote the town and to protect it from depredation by the unscrupulous, so far achieving very positive results: the environment is cared for, services are timely and the hotels and restaurants are among the best in region.
